MEC IN THE PRESS

In the two invigorating seasons that the percussionist Jonathan Hepfer has headed it, Monday Evening Concerts has become a revelatory experiment in not underestimating his public — a public that, like him, is open to astonishment...Hepfer is quickly building trust: If he’s interested in something, it’s bound to be interesting and the performances can be counted on to thrill...The new generation in the hall let a special experience from a series, begun in 1939 and newly revitalized, sink in. I know nothing like it. (Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times)

"Monday Evening Concerts, the venerable Los Angeles new-music series, has experienced a spectacular creative surge under the direction of the percussionist and conductor Jonathan Hepfer." – (Alex Ross, The New Yorker)

Lighted with a halo, Tines sang Eastman’s solo “Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” with what may be even more otherworldliness and mesmerizing sanctity than the composer himself brought to his performances. A short text exhorts Joan to speak boldly with phrases that repeat, growing in intensity. It took one’s breath away. (Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times)
