A MESSAGE FROM MEC'S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, JONATHAN HEPFER
I am so pleased to invite you all to a very special screening at one of my favorite cultural institutions in Los Angeles: the American Cinemathèque. This Friday, June 30, I have the privilege of introducing the West Coast premiere of a film I care about very deeply: Anaïs Nganzo's Julius Eastman documentary 'A Different Score.' The film will be screened alongside Hans G. Helms' documentary 'New Music: Sounds and Voices from the Avant-Garde New York 1971.'
Anaïs' documentary is a project very dear to my heart. The film was made during a series of Julius Eastman portrait concerts that Devonté Hynes, Adam Tendler and I performed in (alongside some stellar French musicians) at the Pinault Collection / Bourse de Commerce in March of 2022. The concerts featured performances of 'Evil N,' 'Gay Guerrilla,' 'Femenine' and 'Buddha' in celebration of Anaïs' publication of the French translation of Renée Levine Packer and Mary Jane Leach's Eastman biography 'Gay Guerrilla.'
This project remains one of my favorite memories as a musician, and I couldn't be happier that Anaïs was there to capture the magic in what has become her directorial debut. The film has already been screened in New York City (Metrograph), London (Rio), and on June 30th will be screened in both Paris (Centre Pompidou) and Los Angeles (American Cinemathèque). It is a truly beautiful film and I can't wait to share it with you.
And I cannot neglect to mention Hans G. Helms' 'New Music.' As an ardent fan and researcher of contemporary music for over two decades, I thought I had seen just about everything on the subject. I was wrong. I first saw this film a few weeks ago at Metrograph in NYC and it absolutely blew me away. The film focuses on many of my heroes - Alvin Lucier, Max Neuhaus, John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and several others - in the early prime of their creative lives. The film immediately became one of my favorite films on the subject and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you love contemporary music, you're in for a treat.
So, I urge you to join us for this very special event. I can't wait to see you all there!

ABOUT THE FILMS :
'A DIFFERENT SCORE' (2023)
Dir: Anaïs Ngbanzo, 31 Minutes, Editions 1989, France
With the participation of Devonté Hynes, Jonathan Hepfer and Adam Tendler
In March 2022, Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection invited British composer Devonté Hynes to perform selected pieces by Julius Eastman. This film intercuts footage of Hynes rehearsing in the museum’s auditorium with previously unseen interviews and recordings from Eastman’s archives. Anaïs Ngbanzo’s captivating directorial debut, “A Different Score” is the first documentary portrait of this iconic figure of the American musical avant-garde. The film emphasizes the political aspect of Eastman’s work, and the courage he showed in dedicating his life to his music.
FORMAT: DCP
'NEW MUSIC: SOUNDS AND VOICES FROM THE AVANT-GARDE NEW YORK 1971' (2010)
Dir: Hans G Helms, 51 Minutes, Michael Blackwood Productions, Germany
With participation of John Cage, Earle Brown, David Tudor, Gordon Mumma, David Behrman, Max Neuhaus, Morton Subotnik, Phil Corner, Joe Jones, Alvin Lucier, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Ben Patterson, and Wolf Rosenberg.
In 1971 we produced, in association with West German Television, a documentation on New York’s musical avant-garde. It was broadcast only in Germany at the time. By 2010, after nearly 40 years, it seemed desirable to recycle the performances and interviews with the composers and to create a revealing look back to those years for English-speaking New Music fans. The film offers valuable insights into the nature and issues of advanced composition at the beginning of the 1970s.
