ABOUT THE EVENT:
'I first heard Pierre Schaeffer's music on the radio in my early twenties.
I was living in Nice, quite close to the airport.
At that time, there were only about five or six flights a day.
And I liked to listen to the big flights because I found the sounds very interesting,
and in this mass of sound, I was able to hear some kind of melody.
So, when I heard this Pierre Schaeffer piece on the radio,
it was just what gave me the freedom to pursue this interest further.
His “Étude aux Chemins de Fer” — of course it’s music!
Like flights are music. Like water in a pipe is music. Everything can become music.
It depends on the way we listen to it, and what we do with it also.'

- Éliane Radigue
Éliane Radigue (born 1932, Paris) is one of the most important composers working in contemporary music today. Since the 1960s, her work has investigated the fabric of sound itself, focusing upon harnessing feedback and the ultra-subtle movements of fragile harmonics in relation to a constant tone. For approximately forty years, Radigue's work was created exclusively using electronic equipment (beginning in the 70s, primarily using an ARP 2500 modular synthesizer and tape). Starting in 2001, Radigue's work shifted gears rather radically, leaving electronic equipment behind, and instead focusing on creating collaborative works with living musicians, starting first with Elemental II for electric bass, and eventually in 2004 focusing exclusively on producing work for acoustic instruments, namely Naldjorlak for two basset horns and cello, and her endless cycle OCCAM OCEAN. Radigue's work for acoustic instruments is marked by in depth collaborations with a small coterie of leaders in the fields of contemporary music interpretation and improvisation. Her works have no scores; rather they are transmitted verbally via a deeply personal exploration (both sonic and spiritual) tailor-made with each individual collaborator. As such, there are only a handful of musicians on the planet who are capable of actually presenting her work. Of this unique collaborative approach, according to notes from the Fondation Cartier: "Each piece is a moment of exchange and sharing between the composer and musicians. Together, they seek a new and intuitive means of communication, where no musical notation is used. The instrument becomes a body whose entire resonance is fully explored by the musician, as well as the broad spectrum of its vibratory undulations. Or in the words of Eliane Radigue herself: 'from the great deep swells to wavelets on beautiful summer days.'" Together with our friends at LAXART, Monday Evening Concerts is absolutely elated to present this extremely rare and special two-night bill of Radigue's works for acoustic instruments. We extend a warm welcome to the brilliant musicians Hélène Breschand (harp), Louis-Michel Marion (five-string contrabass), and Carol Robinson (bass clarinet), all of whom will be flying in from France to share these profound works. We are also immensely grateful to the Marciano Art Foundation for allowing us to present this work in their sublime space. We urge you not to miss this! |
