"Lighted with a halo, Tines sang Eastman’s solo “Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” with what may be even more otherworldliness and mesmerizing sanctity than the composer himself brought to his performances. A short text exhorts Joan to speak boldly with phrases that repeat, growing in intensity. It took one’s breath away." - Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times
Following his critically-acclaimed debut singing Julius Eastman's Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc on Monday Evening Concerts in 2017, the bass-baritone phenom Davóne Tines returns to Los Angeles to present the first West Coast performance of his Recital No. 1, which he will be debuting at Carnegie Hall. This program will feature works by J.S. Bach, sprituals arranged by Moses Hogan and Margaret Bonds, Tines's own modified rendition of Julius Eastman's Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc, and newly-written works by MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw.
