Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School
The Messenger
Sometimes a program can be a super-composition: a sequence of diverse pieces that somehow speak to one another, and say together more than any of them could say by itself. So it is here, in a set that also offers a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s great pianists. Lubimov was formed in the declining Soviet Union, like several of the composers he features, and he shares with them an immediacy that is richly nuanced, a vast range of expression pervaded by an essential purity. There will be tragedy here and quiet intimacy, distance and freshness, form breaking under the strain of emotion, and through it all the gleam of beauty.
Monday Evening Concerts dedicates this concert to the memory of Ernest Fleischmann.
