Artist Biography
Sidsel Endresen Singer, Composer, Lyricist
Sidsel Endresen has been at the forefront of the Norwegian music scene for more than two decades. Her work has spanned genres from "fusion" and "jazz-rock in the 80's, to free-improvisation, electronics and "new music" in the 90's and the new millennium.

She has fronted a number of her own projects and groups since 1984—and collaborated with a large number of Norwegian and international jazz—and contemporary musicians.

She has soloed with Norwegian and International bigbands, choirs and symphonic orchestras—worked within multi-media, performance, theatre and dance—and performed extensively with the voice as solo instrument.

She has since 1990 received wide international recognition and critical acclaim.

Albums:

She has released 16 albums—and participated as sidewoman on a number of other artists' releases: Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft, Jon Balke, Django Bates, Christof Lauer, Trygve Seim, among others.

She has also participated in various film-scores, both as singer and songwriter.

Commissions:

Outside of creating music and lyrics for her own projects—she has written music for 11 dance and theatre productions—she has been festival composer for the Molde International Jazz Festival (1993), and Bergen NattJazz (2002); and has commissioned works for: VossaJazz (1998), NRK (1998), and BBC/Barbican (2005).

Prizes/Awards:

She has been awarded, among others: 4 Norwegian Grammies, the Buddy Award in 2001 (Norway's highest Jazz award), Oslo City's Artist Award in 2002, as well as being nominated for the Nordic Council Music Award in 2000 (Scandinavia's highest music award).

Tours/Festivals:

She has toured and performed at festivals in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Europe, Canada, China and Japan.

2004: release of cd: Merriwinkle (Jazzland/Universal, 2004), in collaboration with Christian Wallumrød and Helge Sten.

2000-2004: Solo-project: Undertow (Jazzland/Universal, 2000), in collaboration with Audun Kleive, Roger Ludvigsen, Patrick Shaw Iversen + Bugge Wesseltoft and Nils Petter Molvær (until 2002).

Since 2002: new line-up: trio with Christian Wallumrød and Jan Bang.

1993-2004: Duo with Bugge Wesseltoft. Released 3 cd's: Night Song (Curling Legs/ACT, 1994), Duplex Ride (CL/ACT, 1998), Out Here, In There (Jazzland/Universal, 2002).

Since 1999: Collaboration with reknowned contemporary music composer Rolf Wallin: Soloist and co-composer in the one-woman-opera LautLeben (performed at various contemporary music festivals in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Europe and the United States).

2000: Wrote and performed the score for the short-film Expedition (Prod. Runi Langum).

1995-99: The a capella vocal trio ESE, in collaboration with Eldbjørg Raknes and Elin Rosseland.Released the cd: "Gack!" (Jazzland/Kemistri, 1999).

1990-97: two solo-releases on the German label ECM: So I Write (ECM, 1990), and Exile (ECM, 1994), in collaboration with Django Bates, Nils Petter Molvær and Jon Christensen - plus David Darling and Bugge Wesseltoft on Exile.

1981-87: five releases on CBS/SONY in collaboration with Jon Eberson : Jive Talking (1981), Polarities (1982), City Visions (1984), Stories (1985), Pigs and Poetry (1987).
